Aston Villa suffer late blow as Forest snatch win at Villa Park

Aston Villa’s difficult start to the Premier League season continued with a 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Villa Park, with Igor Jesus scoring an 88th-minute winner after Unai Emery’s side were forced to finish the match with 10 men.

Villa looked set to rescue at least a point after Alysson headed home his first goal for the club in the 74th minute to cancel out Liam Delap’s opener.

However, Ian Maatsen’s injury left Villa a player short for the closing stages, with Emery having already used all five substitutions. Forest took advantage and found the decisive goal through substitute Igor Jesus.

The result means Villa have now suffered their third defeat in four Premier League matches.

Lindelof denied as Villa miss early chance

Villa had an excellent opportunity to break the deadlock inside the opening 10 minutes.

A deflected cross fell to Victor Lindelof, whose effort was kept out by Matz Sels after taking a touch off Murillo and heading towards the post.

The ball then fell back to Lindelof, who was only a few yards from goal, but the Forest goalkeeper somehow made another save to deny the Swedish defender.

It proved to be a significant missed opportunity in a first half in which clear chances were otherwise limited.

Forest gradually settled into the contest, with Zion Suzuki making routine saves from distance. Morgan Gibbs-White also found the Villa goalkeeper after a quick passing move created an opening.

Neco Williams then had Forest’s best opportunity before half-time, but the wing-back fired over from inside the box.

Villa were also forced into an early change when Pau Torres picked up an injury, with Tyrone Mings replacing him.

Forest strike immediately after half-time

Emery made two further changes at the interval, bringing on Tammy Abraham and Alysson for Nicolas Jackson and George Hemmings.

The changes did not have the desired immediate effect.

Forest took the lead within a minute of the restart when Boubacar Kamara lost possession and Liam Delap took advantage, driving a low effort from outside the box into the bottom corner.

The goal gave Forest confidence and they began to threaten a second.

Ndoye missed two opportunities and saw another effort blocked by Mings, while Delap headed wide before having another goal ruled out for a marginal offside.

Villa needed a response, and Emery turned to his two new signings.

Manzambi and Mbaye make Aston Villa debuts

Johan Manzambi and Ibrahim Mbaye were introduced shortly after the hour mark, making their first appearances for Aston Villa.

Mbaye immediately offered a threat, forcing Sels into a strong save from a drive which the goalkeeper pushed around the post.

Villa then made the pressure count.

From the resulting corner, John McGinn delivered into the area and Alysson rose unmarked to head the ball into the bottom corner, bringing Villa level in the 74th minute.

It was Alysson’s first goal for the club and, significantly, Villa’s first Premier League goal of the season.

With the score level, Villa appeared to have a chance of completing a turnaround.

Maatsen injury changes the game

The momentum shifted again with 10 minutes remaining.

Ian Maatsen went down after being challenged by James McAtee, leaving Aston Villa with a major problem. Emery had already made all five substitutions, meaning the left-back could not be replaced.

Villa therefore had to play the remainder of the match with 10 men.

Suzuki did his best to keep the hosts level, saving from Daniel Munoz and Xaver Schlager as Forest looked to exploit their numerical advantage.

Eventually, however, the pressure told.

Igor Jesus scores late winner

Forest found the decisive goal in the 88th minute.

Gibbs-White helped the ball on from Munoz’s cross and Igor Jesus finished low inside the post, giving Forest all three points.

The victory was particularly significant for Forest, who had not won at Villa Park since 1994.

For Aston Villa, it was another frustrating evening in which promising moments were undermined by missed opportunities, injuries and a difficult second half.

Villa’s Premier League struggles continue

The defeat leaves Aston Villa searching for consistency after a difficult opening to the campaign.

Villa had chances to score early, eventually found an equaliser through Alysson and introduced Manzambi and Mbaye for their first appearances.

But the late injury to Maatsen left Emery’s side vulnerable, and Forest punished the situation with two points seemingly within reach.

The result also extends Emery’s poor record against Oliver Glasner, with the Villa manager still without a victory over the Forest boss after eight meetings.

There were positives to take from Villa’s performance, particularly the emergence of Alysson and the debuts of Manzambi and Mbaye.

Alysson’s goal could prove important for his confidence, while Mbaye showed immediately that he can provide another attacking option.

But the bigger concern is the result.

Villa cannot afford to keep dropping points in matches where opportunities are available to take control. Lindelof’s early double chance was an example of the fine margins involved, while the team struggled to respond after Delap’s opener.

The Maatsen injury was extremely unfortunate, but finishing with 10 men after all five substitutions had been used ultimately changed the contest.

For Emery and Villa, the priority now has to be finding a way to turn encouraging moments into complete performances and, most importantly, Premier League points.
