Aston Villa reportedly eye €30m Bayern Munich defensive star

Aston Villa are reportedly monitoring Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae ahead of the January transfer window as Unai Emery looks to strengthen his defensive options.

Aston Villa are reportedly preparing to compete with Tottenham Hotspur, Juventus and AC Milan for the signing of Bayern Munich centre-back Kim Min-jae when the January transfer window opens.

Unai Emery’s side moved above Tottenham in the Premier League table following their 3–2 victory in north London on Saturday. However, both clubs have made concerning starts defensively, with goals conceded proving to be a significant issue.

Villa have conceded nine goals in their opening five league matches, while Tottenham have allowed eight. Although Emery’s team finally secured their first Premier League victory of the campaign at the weekend, defensive concerns remain.

Aston Villa looking for defensive reinforcements

Both clubs lost important central defenders during the summer.

Aston Villa reluctantly sold Ezri Konsa to Arsenal, while Tottenham agreed to part ways with captain Cristian Romero after the defender made it clear that he wanted to leave.

Villa responded by signing Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Modou Keba Cissé to strengthen their defensive options. However, with Pau Torres still recovering from a hamstring injury, Tyrone Mings and Victor Lindelöf have been the preferred centre-back pairing.

According to a report from Germany, Aston Villa could now turn their attention to Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae, who may be viewed as a potential upgrade to Emery’s current defensive options.

Kim Min-jae attracting interest from several clubs

Despite not being a regular starter for the reigning Bundesliga champions, Kim Min-jae remained at Bayern Munich beyond the summer transfer window.

However, the South Korea international’s future could become uncertain again in the coming months, with several clubs reportedly monitoring his situation.

German outlet Fussball News claims that Aston Villa, Tottenham, Juventus and AC Milan are all interested in the 29-year-old defender.

The report also states that Bayern’s management are planning to meet with Min-jae in December to discuss his role and long-term future at the club.

Should Bayern decide to allow the defender to leave, negotiations could reportedly begin at around €25 million to €30 million.

Bayern could demand up to €30 million

Min-jae has earned 82 international caps for South Korea and has made five appearances for Bayern Munich this season, accumulating 399 minutes of playing time.

His most recent appearance came during Bayern’s 7–0 victory over Union Berlin, when he was introduced at half-time.

The defender has made 121 appearances for Bayern since joining the club and has won two Bundesliga titles, as well as the German Cup, during his time in Germany.

A potential move to Villa Park could therefore represent a major defensive addition for Emery, particularly if the club’s defensive struggles continue throughout the opening months of the season.

With the January transfer window approaching, Kim Min-jae is a name worth monitoring as Aston Villa assess their options at the back.

The Aston Villa News BR verdict

Kim Min-jae’s experience at the highest level would make him an interesting option for Aston Villa, particularly given the club’s defensive concerns and the uncertainty surrounding Pau Torres’ recovery.

However, the reported €25m–€30m asking price would represent a significant investment. Any potential move would depend on Bayern’s plans for the defender, as well as Villa’s assessment of their defensive needs later in the season.
