Aston Villa could be considering Lucien Agoumé as a potential midfield addition after reportedly taking a close look at the Sevilla midfielder during their recent trip to Spain.
The 24-year-old is said to have impressed Unai Emery during Villa’s 3-1 friendly victory over Sevilla, with the club subsequently reportedly making contact with the Spanish side about a possible transfer.
Agoumé is not being viewed simply as a defensive midfielder. He has instead been described as a complete player, capable of winning the ball, using his physical strength, carrying possession through the lines and controlling the tempo with composure.
Those qualities could make him an interesting option for Emery as he looks to strengthen his midfield.
Agoumé reportedly caught Emery’s attention
Villa’s recent trip to Spain gave the club an opportunity to assess Agoumé at close quarters.
The midfielder played for Sevilla in the friendly, where Villa eventually came from behind to win 3-1.
His performance is reportedly believed to have impressed Emery, with the possibility of a transfer subsequently becoming a subject of discussion between the two clubs.
Agoumé has already established himself as an important player for Sevilla. He has made 93 appearances for the club since his permanent move, including 36 appearances last season.
What could Agoumé offer Aston Villa?
The appeal appears to go beyond his defensive qualities.
Agoumé has been described as a midfielder who can recover possession, make use of his physicality and drive forward with the ball.
His ability to break lines through his dribbling could also provide another dimension to Villa’s midfield, while his composure in possession would fit the demands of a team expected to build attacks with control.
That combination could be particularly attractive to Emery.
Rather than bringing in a midfielder whose role would be limited to protecting the defence, Villa could potentially be looking at a player capable of contributing in several areas of the game.
Sevilla reportedly want a significant fee
The biggest question would be the financial commitment required to sign Agoumé.
According to the reports, Sevilla value the midfielder at around €40 million and would want more than €30 million simply to begin negotiations.
That would represent a significant investment for Villa.
There is also reportedly competition for the player’s signature, with Arsenal and Manchester United said to be monitoring his situation.
If those clubs were to make an approach, Villa could potentially face a battle to secure the midfielder.
Is Agoumé worth €40 million?
That is where the biggest debate begins.
Agoumé’s profile appears to fit the type of midfielder Emery could appreciate, particularly given his combination of defensive work, physicality, ball carrying and ability to retain possession.
However, spending €30m-€40m on a defensive midfielder would still represent a major commitment.
Villa would need to be convinced that Agoumé can immediately raise the level of the midfield rather than simply provide additional depth.
His reported performance against Villa may have strengthened Emery’s interest, but one friendly match alone cannot determine whether such an investment would be justified.
Aston Villa may need to move quickly
If Emery genuinely sees Agoumé as the midfielder capable of becoming an important part of his plans, Villa may not want to wait too long.
The reported interest from Arsenal and Manchester United could make negotiations more difficult if either club decides to act.
For Villa, the decision would ultimately come down to whether Agoumé is viewed as a £30m-plus squad option or a player capable of becoming a key part of Emery’s midfield.
If the latter is true, the investment could make considerably more sense.
The Aston Villa News BR verdict
Agoumé is an intriguing option because his profile appears to offer more than simply defensive protection.
A midfielder who can win possession, use his physical strength, carry the ball and remain composed in possession could give Emery another option in the middle of the pitch.
The reported €40m valuation, however, means Villa would need to be certain that Agoumé can make a significant impact.
If Emery genuinely believes the Sevilla midfielder can become the engine his midfield needs, Villa may have a reason to move before Arsenal or Manchester United turn interest into a formal offer.
For now, though, the key question remains: is Lucien Agoumé good enough to justify a €40m investment?
