Aston Villa delivered a statement performance in Europe, dismantling Fenerbahçe 6-0 to record the biggest victory in the club’s history in European competition. Unai Emery’s side produced an emphatic display at Villa Park, giving their supporters plenty to celebrate and strengthening their position in the Champions League group phase.
Johan Manzambi opened the scoring before Nicolas Jackson struck twice to put Villa firmly in control before the interval. Ross Barkley added two more after the break, including a penalty, and substitute Tammy Abraham completed the rout late on.
The result also provided a welcome boost for a team still searching for its first home win in the Premier League this season.
Manzambi and Jackson put Villa in control
Villa started aggressively and took the lead in the 12th minute. A short corner routine created the opening, with John McGinn delivering into the area. Fenerbahçe failed to clear convincingly, allowing Manzambi to control the ball before shooting low from close range. A deflection off Milan Skriniar helped the effort beat goalkeeper Ederson.
The visitors had opportunities to respond. Zion Suzuki made important saves to deny Vedat Muriqi, including a stop with his legs and another in a one-on-one situation. Fenerbahçe also threatened through Mason Greenwood, although he could not make clean contact with an effort from outside the box.
Villa proved far more clinical at the other end. Boubacar Kamara won possession from Ismail Yuksek and played the ball to Jackson, who finished into the bottom corner to double the advantage.
Fenerbahçe came close to reducing the deficit when Irfan Kahveci found Aydin with an excellent pass. Suzuki pushed the resulting effort onto the crossbar, preserving Villa’s two-goal cushion.
McGinn then sparked another attacking move by winning the ball in the opposition half. Jackson combined with Barkley before finishing confidently again, giving Villa a commanding 3-0 lead before half-time.
Barkley scores twice as Villa run riot
Villa continued to create chances after the restart. McGinn tested Ederson following good work from Ibrahim Mbaye, while Mbaye himself was denied by the goalkeeper. Matty Cash also came close with a shot that took a deflection and went narrowly wide.
Ederson made another important stop against Mbaye during a quick counter-attack, but Fenerbahçe eventually conceded again.
Yuksek brought down Manzambi inside the penalty area, giving Villa the chance to extend their lead from the spot. Barkley converted with a stuttering run-up, scoring Villa’s first penalty in nearly 18 months, according to the original match report.
The midfielder then claimed his second of the night when his shot from outside the box took a deflection off substitute Bartug Elmaz and rolled into the net.
With the match already beyond Fenerbahçe, Villa added a sixth late on. Substitute Tammy Abraham found the net to complete a remarkable European evening for Emery’s team.
Villa strengthen their Champions League position
The victory means Villa have won their opening two Champions League group-phase fixtures. Another win against Viking in their next home European match would put them in a strong position to pursue a place in the competition’s top eight.
The performance was also an encouraging display from a team that has continued to win regularly at Villa Park under Emery, despite their struggles to secure a home league victory.
The manager handed starts to Manzambi, Jackson and Mbaye together for the first time, and all three contributed to an attacking performance that overwhelmed the visitors.
Fenerbahçe, meanwhile, struggled to cope with Villa’s pace and movement. Greenwood’s return to play in England for the first time since January 2022 attracted attention, but the match was ultimately dominated by the home side’s attacking quality.
Aston Villa make European history
Villa’s six-goal margin established a new club record for their biggest victory in European competition. The result offered a memorable night for supporters and underlined the team’s ability to produce a high level of performance on the continental stage.
With two wins from their first two Champions League fixtures, Emery’s side have given themselves an excellent platform to build on as the group phase continues.
