Aston Villa stun Man City as Nicolas Jackson scores decisive brace

Aston Villa delivered a statement victory at Villa Park, beating Manchester City 2-1 to end the visitors’ perfect start to the Premier League season. Nicolas Jackson scored twice, including a decisive second-half finish, as Unai Emery’s side extended their unbeaten run to seven matches in all competitions.

John McGinn capitalised on a mistake from Marc Guehi to set up Jackson for the opening goal after just six minutes. Manchester City responded through Erling Haaland, who headed home his ninth league goal of the season shortly after the interval.

However, Villa refused to surrender their advantage for long. Substitute Ibrahim Mbaye provided an excellent low cross for Jackson, who finished underneath Gianluigi Donnarumma to restore the hosts’ lead.

The result handed City their first Premier League defeat of the campaign, while Villa continued their impressive recent form with a sixth victory in seven games.

McGinn and Jackson punish Manchester City’s early mistake

Villa made an immediate impact against the league leaders.

McGinn was alert to Guehi’s heavy touch and quickly won possession before playing a pass into Jackson’s path.

The Chelsea loanee faced a difficult angle but lifted his finish over Donnarumma to give the hosts an early advantage.

Manchester City attempted to respond through Iliman Ndiaye, who twice threatened to equalise.

The Senegalese winger first forced Zion Suzuki into an excellent diving save before cutting inside and striking the outside of the post.

Suzuki was also called into action against Rayan Cherki, holding a low effort after Jeremy Doku delivered a cutback.

Villa continued to threaten on the counter-attack, with McGinn repeatedly looking for Jackson’s runs behind the City defence.

Guehi was eventually booked for pulling Jackson down just outside the penalty area. The defender was replaced at half-time, with Rico Lewis coming on.

Haaland equalises after the break

Manchester City found their breakthrough seven minutes into the second half.

Ndiaye delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area, and Haaland rose above Victor Lindelof to head the ball into the net.

The goal was Haaland’s ninth in the Premier League this season and brought City level at Villa Park.

The visitors pushed for a second, with Josko Gvardiol producing a powerful effort that Suzuki tipped onto the crossbar.

Doku also attempted to find the target with a low shot, but his effort went wide.

Villa had to withstand a period of pressure after City’s equaliser, but Emery’s side remained dangerous whenever they recovered possession.

Jackson scores again after Mbaye’s introduction

Villa regained the lead just past the hour mark through another excellent combination involving Jackson.

Mbaye had entered the game shortly before the goal, replacing Alysson in the 59th minute.

Jackson then sent the substitute racing down the right channel with a sweeping forward pass.

Mbaye timed his run perfectly and delivered a low cross into the penalty area.

Jackson completed the move with a powerful finish underneath Donnarumma, giving Villa a 2-1 advantage.

The goal continued Jackson’s impressive scoring form and proved decisive in ending City’s unbeaten league start.

Suzuki and Maatsen protect Villa’s advantage

Manchester City continued searching for an equaliser after falling behind.

Suzuki produced another important intervention when Gvardiol attempted to finish from close range following a low Doku cross that deflected into his path.

Villa’s defence also had to remain alert during the closing stages.

The visitors came close to rescuing a point when Phil Foden delivered a cross from the by-line.

Haaland rose above the defenders to meet the ball, but Maatsen cleared his towering header virtually off the goal line.

Villa survived the late pressure and secured an important victory in front of their home supporters.

Emery celebrates four years at Aston Villa with another victory

The match came on Emery’s fourth anniversary in the Aston Villa dugout.

The manager made four changes from the team’s Champions League victory over Viking FK.

Johan Manzambi recovered from a knock to return to the starting line-up, while Matty Cash, Ian Maatsen and Boubacar Kamara were also recalled.

Maatsen made his comeback from injury, with Villa again operating without natural full-backs in the starting XI.

João Gomes played at right-back but moved into midfield when the hosts had possession.

The victory extended Villa’s unbeaten run to seven matches in all competitions, including six wins.

The club also recorded its 12th consecutive home victory in European competition, continuing an impressive run at Villa Park.

Aston Villa prepare for Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup

Villa will now turn their attention to the Carabao Cup.

Emery’s side travel to Dean Court on Wednesday night to face AFC Bournemouth in the fourth round.

After ending Manchester City’s perfect league start, Villa will look to carry their momentum into the cup competition.

The victory also strengthens the team’s confidence following a difficult beginning to the season.

The Aston Villa News BR verdict

Aston Villa’s victory over Manchester City was built on quick reactions, effective counter-attacks and two excellent finishes from Nicolas Jackson.

McGinn’s pressing created the opening goal, while Mbaye made an immediate impact after coming off the bench to provide the decisive assist.

Jackson’s brace was the headline, but Suzuki also played an important role in protecting the advantage, particularly when City threatened through Ndiaye and Gvardiol.

Villa have now gone seven games without defeat in all competitions, and beating the Premier League leaders represents another important step in Emery’s team’s recovery.

The next challenge is to maintain that consistency against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup, with Villa hoping their impressive run continues.
