“Now we are competing and trying to achieve our objectives. One of those objectives is to build a team, make the players who are arriving feel comfortable and gain confidence.”
Taylor Harwood-Bellis earns praise on his debut
Taylor Harwood-Bellis made his Aston Villa debut against Coventry, and Emery was pleased with the defender’s display.
The manager praised the youngster’s attitude, experience and ability to understand how to operate within Villa’s tactical structure.
“He is young, but he has experience and played in the style we have in this area. He understands how to use his abilities and how to impose his style within our structure.”
Emery believes Harwood-Bellis is beginning to understand how he can make the most of his strengths while adapting to the demands of the team.
Tammy Abraham receives a confidence boost
Abraham was one of the standout performers at Coventry, scoring twice to help Villa progress in the competition.
Emery described the striker’s display as highly positive and believes the goals will provide him with additional confidence ahead of the next fixtures.
“It was a very, very positive performance from him today. Tammy scored goals, of course, and he will feel confident for the next matches. It is also important for us to strengthen the team.”
The manager added that Abraham must continue working hard, performing well and reaching the required level over the coming weeks and months.
Marco Bizot injury provides opportunity for Zion Suzuki
Marco Bizot was forced off during the first half after experiencing discomfort in his back.
Emery said the goalkeeper had performed well before being substituted and suggested that the issue was not expected to be serious.
Zion Suzuki replaced Bizot and completed another 45 minutes of football, something Emery viewed positively as the Japan international continues to build up his playing time.
“He was feeling a little pain in his back and we needed to replace him. I did not expect it to be a serious injury, but it was positive for Zion to play another 45 minutes and gain more time on the pitch.”
Emery urges patience over Alejandro Garnacho
Alejandro Garnacho was not involved against Coventry, and Unai Emery called on the winger to continue working hard while waiting for his opportunity.
The Villa boss explained that Garnacho is currently behind other players in the pecking order after experiencing some difficulties during pre-season.
“Keep working. Work, work, train and work. When he has minutes to play, try to play well. He is progressing, but now we have players ahead of him.”
Emery added that Garnacho is “a little behind” because of circumstances during pre-season and stressed that patience would be necessary.
Carabao Cup remains a trophy target
Unai Emery confirmed that Aston Villa are taking the Carabao Cup seriously, with the competition representing both a potential route to silverware and a pathway into European football.
The manager was pleased with the way the experienced players contributed against Coventry and felt Villa deserved their victory.
He also explained that the club has two clear objectives in the competition: to challenge for the trophy and to continue integrating new signings into the team’s playing style.
“Our objective in this competition was to win a trophy, and winning it is also a way into Europe. We always want to be competing for titles.”
Villa now turn their attention to Tottenham
Aston Villa’s next challenge will come against Tottenham on Saturday.
Unai Emery said the club would assess the condition of the squad before deciding which players would be available, with recovery now the main priority following the midweek cup fixture.
“The focus of every match now is obviously our challenge on Saturday against Tottenham. We will try to recover as well as possible and be ready for the game.”
