Aston Villa throw away lead twice in frustrating Brentford draw

Aston Villa were left frustrated after surrendering their advantage twice in a 2-2 draw with Brentford at Villa Park, extending their wait for a first home win of the season.

Unai Emery’s side had enough opportunities to take all three points, but defensive lapses and missed chances proved costly. John McGinn appeared to have put Villa on course for victory late in the second half, only for the visitors to respond almost immediately.

Jackson responds after early Brentford breakthrough

Brentford took the lead in the 10th minute after Tyrone Mings lost possession inside his own half. Following the clearance of Igor Thiago’s cross, Yehor Yarmolyuk collected the ball inside the area and finished beyond Zion Suzuki.

Villa’s response came just two minutes later. Emi Buendia’s long-range effort took a deflection and fell kindly for Nicolas Jackson, who reacted quickly to beat Caoimhin Kelleher from a difficult angle.

The opening half was a physical contest, with Brentford committing 12 fouls compared with Villa’s four. Despite the visitors’ approach, Emery’s team created the more promising openings.

Johan Manzambi saw two efforts blocked before Buendia fired over from close range. McGinn also came close to scoring before the interval, but Kelleher produced an excellent save to deny the Villa captain.

Ruggeri injury forces half-time change

Villa made a defensive adjustment at the break after Matteo Ruggeri was forced off with an injury. Aaron Wan-Bissaka replaced him and took up the left-back position.

The home side initially struggled to regain their rhythm. Suzuki kept out a Kevin Schade volley, while Thiago sent an effort over the crossbar for Brentford.

Villa gradually threatened again, with Buendia finding the side netting before another attempt was deflected narrowly wide by Kristoffer Ajer.

McGinn puts Villa ahead before another Brentford reply

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 77th minute. Manzambi collected a rebound and found McGinn at the far post, where the captain’s shot took a deflection off Ajer and flew past Kelleher.

Villa Park had reason to believe the long-awaited home victory was within reach. However, that advantage lasted only two minutes.

Ajer drove into the penalty area, worked his way between two defenders and sent a low effort towards goal. The ball struck Victor Lindelöf on its way through, leaving Suzuki unable to prevent Brentford from equalising.

The hosts pushed for a third goal in the closing stages. McGinn fired straight at Kelleher from a promising position, while Boubacar Kamara sent a powerful attempt over the crossbar.

Villa could not find a winner, leaving Emery to reflect on another missed opportunity in front of their home supporters.

Villa need to turn chances into victories

The result will be particularly disappointing for Villa because they created several good opportunities and twice recovered from falling behind. Their inability to protect the lead after McGinn’s late goal proved decisive.

There was, at least, one positive: Villa avoided a third consecutive home league defeat, which would have been their first such run under Emery.

The immediate challenge is to improve their defensive concentration and make better use of their attacking opportunities. Until those issues are addressed, promising performances may continue to produce fewer points than Aston Villa expect.

Aston Villa News BR verdict

Aston Villa showed resilience by coming back from behind twice, but the late equaliser will feel like two points dropped. McGinn’s goal should have provided the platform for a valuable home victory, yet the team could not hold on for even a few minutes.

Emery will want greater defensive discipline and more clinical finishing. Aston Villa created enough chances to win, but their first home victory of the season remains elusive.
